Tensions rise between Cyprus Ministry of Education and teachers' union over reform negotiations
A meeting scheduled for Friday between the Cyprus Ministry of Education and the teachers' union POED regarding the educator appointment system is at risk of cancellation. POED President Myria Vasiliou stated the union will not attend unless the Ministry provides its proposals in writing, a demand stemming from frustration over two years of alleged inaction and missed deadlines. The current law dictates the abolition of existing appointment lists by August 2027, and the union warns that a lack of concrete planning could lead to severe staffing shortages. Minister of Education Athina Michaelidou maintains that the established methodology involves a collaborative dialogue rather than the imposition of pre-drafted proposals. She noted that the Ministry intends to share a written outline of its position by the end of July. While the Minister expressed that the union is free to skip the meeting, she questioned the efficacy of negotiations when one party is absent. The dispute also highlights broader concerns from POED regarding school infrastructure and the need to retain experienced educators.
