Death of renowned Greek actress Maro Kontou at age 92

Maro Kontou, a prominent figure of Greek theatre and cinema, died on July 15, 2026, at the age of 92. The actress had been dealing with serious health issues, including a hip fracture and subsequent complications, which led to her hospitalization at Agios Savvas Oncology Hospital, where she passed away. Her funeral is scheduled for Friday, July 17, at the First Cemetery of Athens. A eulogy will be delivered by Nikitas Kaklamanis, a close friend and President of the Hellenic Parliament. In accordance with her final wishes, Kontou requested that a glass of whiskey and a lit cigarette be placed at her seat during social gatherings with friends. Her family has requested that donations be made to the Mitera Infant Center in lieu of funeral wreaths. Throughout her career spanning over seven decades, she appeared in approximately 90 theatrical productions and over 60 films, becoming a symbol of the golden age of Greek cinema. She was particularly known for her iconic role as Eleni Kokovikou in the 1965 film 'I gyni na fovetai ton andra'.
