Acclaimed Greek actress Maro Kontou passed away on July 15, 2026, at the age of 92. Born on June 21, 1934, in the Koukaki neighborhood of Athens, she enjoyed a career spanning over seven decades in theater, cinema, and television. Kontou studied at the State School of Dance and the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. Her professional career began at the National Theatre of Greece in 1954, eventually performing in approximately 90 theatrical productions and over 60 films. Sources confirm she was recently hospitalized at the Agios Savvas hospital following a previous discharge from Attikon hospital; one report mentioned a prior recovery from a hip and rib injury sustained during a fall. Despite efforts by medical staff, she could not be saved.
