Odysseas Michaelidis warns of critical window for Cyprus issue progress

During a special plenary session of the House of Representatives marking the 1974 Turkish invasion, Odysseas Michaelidis stated that current efforts to resolve the Cyprus issue represent a potentially final opportunity. He cited the upcoming conclusion of United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' term at the end of the year as the primary reason for this restricted timeline. Michaelidis welcomed the appointment of Raffaele Fitto as the European Commission's Special Representative for Cyprus, viewing it as a sign of deeper EU engagement. However, he warned of significant obstacles, noting that Turkey continues to promote a two-state solution and sovereign equality. He also expressed concern over proposals for a 'loose federation' which he claims borders on a confederation. Finally, Michaelidis warned that increased diplomatic activity could lead to undue pressure on the Republic of Cyprus to accept a settlement that may contradict international resolutions.
