Dead bottlenose dolphin discovered on Akamas coast
A dead bottlenose dolphin, scientifically known as Tursiops truncatus, was found washed up on the coast of Akamas, Cyprus, on Wednesday. The discovery was reported following photographs shared by the 'Cyprus and East Med Sea Life' group. While the exact cause of death remains currently unknown, officials have highlighted the species as one of the most common cetaceans in local waters. The bottlenose dolphin can reach lengths of four metres and weights of 500 kilograms, typically inhabiting coastal areas in groups of five to 25 individuals. Authorities recently noted increased dolphin sightings as a positive sign of the marine ecosystem's status. In response to the incident, officials issued a reminder to boat operators to maintain safe distances and reduce speeds when encountering marine mammals. Dolphins remain protected under both Cypriot and European legislation, and the public is advised against actions that could potentially disturb or harm them.
