Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo reaches critical stage

Health authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo have reported over 2,000 cases of the Bundibugyo Ebola strain and 754 deaths across five provinces. The World Health Organization (WHO) warns that the actual number of cases could be two to four times higher than official figures, while confirming that disease surveillance is improving. Currently, there is no vaccine or recognized treatment for this specific strain, although the first clinical trial for an antiviral medication has commenced. Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) reports that the number of confirmed cases has tripled in less than five weeks, with the death toll rising more than fivefold. WHO officials have appealed for more funding, noting that only 40% of the required $115 million has been secured to fight the outbreak. MSF has urged for an urgent strengthening of the medical response to combat the unprecedented rate of transmission.
