Bear enters home in Iwate prefecture, Japan
A family in Shizukuishi, Iwate prefecture, contacted police on Monday evening after discovering a bear inside their kitchen. The animal reportedly searched the refrigerator for food and knocked over a trash can before exiting through a rear door. Local authorities noted that at least three other homes in the same area have reported bear intrusions since July 5. This incident follows a broader trend of increased bear sightings in urban areas as animals forage for food after emerging from hibernation. According to Japan's Ministry of the Environment, there have been at least five fatal bear attacks in the country since April 1. This follows a record year in 2023, which saw 13 fatal attacks reported nationwide. Efforts to manage the bear population include recent operations involving police and hunters to capture wandering animals.
