Akel leader advocates for bizonal, bicommunal federation in Cyprus
On Wednesday, Akel Secretary-General Stefanos Stefanou addressed an event in Idalion commemorating the 1974 coup and the Turkish invasion. Stefanou stated that a bizonal, bicommunal federation remains the only realistic framework for reunifying Cyprus and ending the Turkish occupation. He warned that abandoning this agreed basis would lead to the permanent partition of the island. The speech emphasized the need for justice for all Cypriot communities, including Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, Maronites, Armenians, and Latins. Stefanou specifically highlighted the ongoing plight of refugees, the missing, the enclaved, and victims of the conflict. He asserted that the struggle for liberation will continue until the consequences of the 1974 invasion are addressed through a formal settlement. According to the Akel leader, the bizonal, bicommunal model represents a historical compromise reached with the Turkish Cypriot side.
