Cyprus reports prolonged heatwave and increased fire risks

The Cyprus Meteorological Department has issued a series of 'yellow' weather alerts as temperatures in inland areas reached 40-43 degrees Celsius between July 16 and July 22, 2026. Official Andreas Kettis confirmed that over 1,350 fire incidents have been recorded since the beginning of 2026, with authorities emphasizing that dry soil and human negligence pose severe threats. Meanwhile, meteorological conditions have been volatile, with intense rainfall reported in the Troodos mountains on July 18. Officials urge the public to exercise extreme caution and refrain from lighting fires, using emergency numbers 1407 or 112 if necessary.
