Cyprus and Lebanon initiate feasibility study for electricity interconnection
The energy ministers of Cyprus, Michalis Damianou, and Lebanon, Joseph Al-Saddi, have officially agreed on the terms of reference for a preliminary feasibility study regarding a potential electricity interconnection between the two nations. This initiative, supported by the World Bank, aims to strengthen regional energy cooperation in the Eastern Mediterranean. The study will be conducted in stages, beginning with an assessment of electricity supply-demand balances and key economic parameters. Should the initial results be positive, a detailed techno-economic study will follow to inform final political decisions. While the project is currently in the preliminary phase, reports suggest potential future integration into the broader Great Sea Interconnector network, which could link Lebanon to the European energy market. The move follows recent bilateral efforts to deepen ties, building upon the November 2025 agreement regarding the delimitation of Exclusive Economic Zones. Both governments believe this cooperation will provide a reliable foundation for evaluating the project's long-term viability.
