UN Secretary-General Guterres expected to visit Cyprus in late July
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres is expected to visit Cyprus in late July in an effort to resume peace talks. While specific dates remain subject to official announcement, reports suggest a visit between July 27 and 29. Guterres is reportedly accompanied by his undersecretaries for peacebuilding, Rosemary DiCarlo, and peace operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix. The itinerary is expected to include separate meetings with Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman, as well as a joint session. His personal envoy, María Ángela Holguín, is coordinating efforts to facilitate an informal five-party meeting. Meanwhile, head of UNFICYP Khassim Diagne is scheduled to brief the UN Security Council on recent reports concerning the mission and the Good Offices. This would mark the first visit to the island by a UN Secretary-General since 2010. European Commission envoy Raffaele Fitto is also expected to visit the region shortly to coordinate with the peace process.
