UN Secretary-General to visit Cyprus in late July
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres is scheduled to visit Cyprus in late July, marking the first such visit by a UN chief since 2010. While some reports suggest late July generally, other sources specify the visit will occur on July 27 and 28. Guterres will be accompanied by undersecretaries-general Rosemary DiCarlo and Jean-Pierre Lacroix. The agenda includes separate meetings with President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman, as well as a joint meeting with both leaders. Additionally, he is expected to engage with bicommunal technical committees and various non-governmental organizations. The objective of the visit is to break the ongoing deadlock and facilitate the resumption of talks regarding the Cyprus problem. Concurrently, UN Special Representative Khassim Diagne is briefing the UN Security Council today on the latest reports concerning the Good Offices mission and UNFICYP. Future diplomatic activity includes an expected visit by European Commission envoy Raffaele Fitto to the region.
