Internal EDEK party conflict intensifies following member disputes
Internal tensions within the EDEK party have escalated following an emergency congress called in response to recent electoral failures. Nikos Nikolaidis, a senior party member and part of a five-member committee tasked with party reform, has accused the leadership of attempting to subvert the mandate of the congress. Key resolutions from the congress included the reversal of member expulsions since 2015, a thorough audit of the party's finances over the last decade, and plans for a statutory congress in October followed by an electoral congress in December. Nikolaidis claimed that during a subsequent Political Bureau meeting, the legality of these decisions was contested. Furthermore, the resignation of EDEK president Nikos Anastasiou has been linked by Nikolaidis to these ongoing internal processes. The party leadership and dissenting members remain in disagreement over the implementation of the reform agenda. The situation highlights deep-seated divisions regarding organizational structure and the cleaning of member registries.
