EPPO files charges against four Greek MPs over agricultural subsidy fraud

The European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO) has initiated criminal proceedings against four sitting members of the Greek Parliament from the New Democracy party: Kostas Skrekas, Christos Boukoros, Maximos Senetakis, and Katerina Papakosta. The charges relate to irregularities in the management of European agricultural subsidies handled by OPEKEPE during 2021. The first three MPs face charges of moral authorship of breach of trust and illegal management of European funds, while Papakosta faces additional charges of moral authorship of false certification and attempted computer fraud. The investigation involves a total of 22 individuals, including former OPEKEPE officials and administrative staff. Conversely, the case was closed for seven other MPs—Giannis Kefalogiannis, Kostas Tsiaras, Notis Mitarakis, Dimitris Vartzopoulos, Theofilos Leontaridis, Vasilis Vasileiadis, and Kostas Karamanlis—due to insufficient evidence. This legal action follows the Greek Parliament's decision on April 24, 2026, to lift the immunity of 11 members to facilitate the investigation. Allegations include illegal interventions in administrative controls, retrospective data modifications, and falsification of audit reports.
