Family members appear in Famagusta court over child abuse charges
A 46-year-old father, his 23-year-old daughter, and his 21-year-old son appeared before the Famagusta District Court to face 122 charges of violence and child abuse. The alleged offenses were reportedly committed against minor family members between 2013 and May 2026. Charges include systematic physical and psychological abuse, child maltreatment, kidnapping, indecent assault, sexual harassment, attempted child sexual abuse, bodily harm, threats, and degrading treatment. The defendants requested legal aid, a decision on which is currently pending. The court ordered that the three remain in custody until the next hearing scheduled for September 8. During the next session, the defendants are expected to enter pleas regarding the charges. The current detention order follows a decision by the Cyprus Court of Appeal, which overturned a previous ruling. The individuals remain in custody as the legal proceedings continue.
