Annual memorial service for Themis Dimitriadis held in Oroklini
The annual memorial service for Themis Dimitriadis, a corporal who died during the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus, is scheduled for Sunday, July 19, at the Agios Andreas church in the Oroklini refugee settlement. Born in 1956, Dimitriadis served in the 181st Field Artillery Squadron. He was killed at age 18 during an engagement between the villages of Syngchari and Bellapais, near Kyrenia. Former Presidential Commissioner Fotis Fotiou noted in a previous eulogy that the unit faced an uneven three-hour battle against encircling Turkish forces. Dimitriadis was initially listed as missing, but his remains were later recovered from a mass grave near the battlefield. His identity was confirmed through the Committee on Missing Persons' exhumation program, and he was officially buried in 2016.
