Appeals court upholds detention for man accused of domestic violence in Larnaca
The Appeals Court has rejected an appeal filed by a man accused of severe domestic violence offenses against his partner. The defendant had been remanded in custody by the Larnaca District Court to await trial at the Larnaca Assize Court. Charges against him include grievous bodily harm, assault, threats, and causing psychological harm in multiple incidents. The defendant argued that his clean criminal record and the victim's current stay in a protected facility justified his release on bail. He further contended that the lower court failed to adequately justify its decision and misapplied legal principles. However, the Appeals Court concluded that the lower court correctly exercised its discretion regarding the risk of witness tampering and the possibility of reoffending. The judges emphasized that detention remains an exceptional measure but found no serious error in the initial ruling. Consequently, the accused remains in custody until his appearance before the Assize Court.
