Overview of saint commemoration days in July
The liturgical calendar commemorates different saints on July 16 and July 17. On July 16, the Orthodox Church honors Bishop Athenogenes and his ten disciples, including Riginos, Maximinos, Patrophilos, Athenogenes, Antiochus, Ammon, Theophrastus, Cleonicus, Peter, and Hesychius. These individuals were arrested during the reign of Emperor Diocletian by Governor Philimarchos and were beheaded in Sebasteia, Cappadocia, after refusing to renounce their faith. Additionally, the day commemorates 15,000 martyrs in Pisidia. On July 17, the Church honors Saint Marina the Great Martyr. According to tradition, she was born in 270 AD in Antioch, Pisidia, to a pagan priest named Aidesios. She became a Christian at age 15, which led her father to reject her. She was subsequently arrested by the Governor Olymvrios, who subjected her to torture and imprisonment in an attempt to force her to renounce her religion. Reports state she resisted these attempts and remained committed to her faith.
