National Federation of Cypriots in the UK addresses 52nd anniversary of 1974 events
The National Federation of Cypriots in the UK has issued formal communications to the governments of the United Kingdom and Turkey marking the 52nd anniversary of the 1974 military intervention in Cyprus. In a resolution submitted to outgoing UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, the Federation acknowledged the strengthening of bilateral relations, including Starmer's visit to Cyprus in December 2024. The Federation called on the new British government to remain actively engaged as a guarantor power, supporting a solution based on UN frameworks and international law. Furthermore, they reiterated their support for a reunified island free from foreign troops and the current guarantee system. In a separate letter to the Turkish Ambassador to the UK, Osman Koray Ertaş, Federation President Christos Karaolis labeled the ongoing presence of Turkish forces in northern Cyprus as an occupation. The organization urged Ankara to participate in the latest initiative proposed by the UN Secretary-General to resume peace talks. These diplomatic efforts emphasize a push for a negotiated settlement regarding the future of the island.
