Cyprus Anti-Corruption Authority defends investigation process for 'Mafia State' book
The Cyprus Independent Authority Against Corruption has issued a statement to reaffirm the validity and impartiality of its investigation into the book 'Mafia State'. The authority addressed public concerns regarding the appointment of Gabrielle Louise McIntyre as lead investigator. To ensure neutrality, the authority screened approximately 25 candidates, prioritizing foreign legal experts with no prior ties to Cyprus. The authority stated that the President of the International Criminal Court provided assurances that McIntyre faced no conflict of interest. Furthermore, the body clarified that all its decisions are made collectively by its five members and recorded in official minutes, rather than by the Commissioner for Transparency alone. While critics have questioned the selection process and potential previous professional links, the authority maintains that the process was rigorous and transparent. This disclosure was made with the approval of the Commissioner for Transparency to uphold public accountability.
