Landslide causes building collapses in Chongqing, China
On July 17, 2026, a major landslide occurred in the Pengshui county of Chongqing, southwest China, leading to the collapse of several residential buildings near the Wujiang Three Bridges. Local authorities had identified rockfalls around 8:00 a.m. and initiated the evacuation of over 60 residents from five and six-story structures. The landslide struck at 9:08 a.m. while the evacuation process was still underway, trapping an unknown number of people beneath the rubble. Emergency rescue operations were immediately launched to locate those missing. Reports regarding the number of survivors vary, with some sources citing eight and others nine people rescued. At least two of the rescued individuals sustained serious injuries. The cause of the landslide remains under investigation.
