Pele's 1958 World Cup jersey auctioned for 4.9 million dollars
The football jersey worn by Pele during the 1958 World Cup final has been sold at a Sotheby’s auction in New York for 4.9 million dollars. In that final, 17-year-old Pele scored two goals in Brazil’s 5-2 victory over Sweden, securing the country’s first World Cup title. The jersey was originally given by Pele to his teammate Dida, and it remained in the family’s possession for decades before appearing in a museum and later being auctioned in 2004. During the current auction, there were ten bids from five different participants, though the identity of the buyer remains undisclosed. This sale marks the second-highest price ever paid for a football shirt. The world record remains held by Diego Maradona’s 1986 match-worn jersey, which sold for 9.3 million dollars.
