Cyprus government approves one million euros for waste site cleanup
The Cypriot Council of Ministers approved €1 million in emergency funding on Thursday to clean up illegal waste dumping sites. This initiative is a joint proposal from the Ministries of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Interior, and Transport, Communications and Works. While the legal responsibility for cleaning these sites lies with local authorities, the government has provided financial support for the third consecutive year. The funding is intended to protect public health, the environment, and aid in fire prevention by removing combustible waste. In 2024, the state allocated €1,001,550.65, and in 2025 it provided €1,219,586.35 as part of the #WasteFreeCyprus campaign. With this new approval, the total government support since 2024 has reached €3,221,137. Funds will be distributed to community service clusters and community councils. Priority will be given to areas identified by authorities as having a high risk of forest fires.
