Health Minister marks World Hepatitis Day with call for prevention

On Friday, Cypriot Health Minister Neofytos Charalambidis addressed a press conference held by the 'Prometheus' Liver Patient and Friends Association in observance of World Hepatitis Day. The Minister described viral hepatitis as a 'silent epidemic' due to its asymptomatic progression, which often leads to severe liver damage before detection. He emphasized the importance of vaccination against Hepatitis B, which is integrated into the National Vaccination Program. Charalambidis highlighted that Hepatitis C is now curable, underscoring the critical need for timely diagnosis. He also noted that Hepatitis D is prevented indirectly through Hepatitis B vaccination. According to the Minister, Cyprus reports favorable public health indicators regarding hepatitis complications compared to other EU member states. However, he cautioned against complacency and reaffirmed the country's commitment to the World Health Organization's goal of eliminating viral hepatitis as a public health threat.
