Major wildfires continue across Spain

As of July 19, 2026, Spain is battling two significant wildfires. A fire that began on Thursday north of Madrid in the Sierra Norte natural park has consumed over 120,000 decares of land, prompting evacuations and the deployment of 350 emergency personnel supported by 25 aircraft. Regional president Emiliano Garcia-Page described the situation as difficult. Simultaneously, a fire that broke out on Wednesday near Ores in the Zaragoza province has led to the evacuation of five villages. Estimates for the Zaragoza fire size vary, with reports citing between 45,000 and 160,000 decares burned. No casualties have been reported from either current blaze. Authorities note that challenging terrain and wind shifts are complicating containment efforts. These events follow a deadly wildfire in Andalusia on July 9, which resulted in 13 deaths and 70,000 decares of land destroyed.
