Severe wildfires ravage France and Spain amid record heatwaves

France and Spain are facing catastrophic wildfires as a result of record-breaking heatwaves in July 2026. In France, over 420,000 decares have burned since January, exceeding the 2022 record and the total area burned in 2025. In Spain, two major wildfires are currently active: one near Guadalajara, which has scorched between 120,000 and 290,000 decares depending on the source, leading to the evacuation of hundreds of people; and another near Zaragoza, where reports of burned land range from 45,000 to 160,000 decares. Spanish authorities have deployed hundreds of firefighters, soldiers, and dozens of aerial units to contain these blazes. No casualties have been reported in these recent events, though a separate fire in Andalusia earlier in July resulted in 13 deaths. Regional officials emphasize the extreme complexity of the fires, citing dry, overgrown vegetation and incoming heatwaves that push temperatures above 40°C. European systems indicate that 2025 saw over 10 million decares burned in the EU, a record since data collection began in 2006.
