Fire service manages multiple wildfires in Cyprus

On July 17, 2026, the Cyprus Fire Service responded to multiple wildfires, including incidents in Deryneia, Kokkinotrimithia, and Livadia. The most significant blaze occurred near an abandoned shoe factory within the UN buffer zone in Kokkinotrimithia. The operation involved four fire engines, two volunteer group units from Atlas and Support Cy, and a UN water tanker, conducted under UN escort. A firefighting aircraft also assisted after coordination with UN officials. The fire destroyed approximately five decares of wild vegetation, waste materials, and wooden pallets, while two old, empty LPG tanks were cooled as a precaution. Separately, a fire in Deryneia burned three decares of acacia and vegetation. The Nicosia District Local Government Organization reported water supply strain in Deneia, Mammari, and Kokkinotrimithia due to the increased water demand for firefighting efforts, urging residents to limit non-essential use.
