Germany and France agree on closer defense cooperation

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and French President Emmanuel Macron met at the Nörvenich Air Base near Cologne to revitalize the Franco-German defense partnership. The leaders announced that German forces will participate in a French nuclear exercise for the first time this year. This decision follows the collapse of the Scaf fighter aircraft project, which was abandoned due to industrial rivalries between Airbus and Dassault. During the joint Defense and Security Council meeting, the two nations committed to developing a common standard to ensure interoperability among all combat systems, including drones and fighter jets. The talks also addressed broader European security concerns, including the Russian threat and potential shifts in United States policy. The meeting took place following a preparatory dinner at the Augustusburg Castle in Brühl. The initiatives aim to strengthen the European defense axis amidst political uncertainty in both nations.
