Amathounta municipality criticizes cabinet approval of new shopping mall
The Cyprus Council of Ministers has approved the construction of a new shopping mall in the Agios Athanasios area. The municipality of Amathounta, led by Mayor Kyriakos Xydias, and the deputy mayors of Agios Athanasios and Yermasogeia, Marinos Kyriakou and Christos Papamichael, expressed strong opposition to this decision. Local authorities claim they were not officially informed and only learned of the approval through media reports. They argue that the development was permitted without the necessary road infrastructure, which they fear will worsen traffic congestion. During a public consultation on October 24, 2025, the municipality had submitted specific recommendations, which they state were effectively ignored. Local officials emphasize that they support investments that create jobs but insist that such projects must be accompanied by proper planning to protect the quality of life. The municipal authorities have indicated they will explore all legal options regarding this project.
