Local authorities express concern over new commercial center approval in Agios Athanasios
The Council of Ministers has reportedly approved the construction of a new commercial center in the Agios Athanasios area. Local municipal leaders, including Amathounta Mayor Kyriakos Xydias and Deputy Mayors Marinos Kyriakou of Agios Athanasios and Christos Papamichael of Yermasoyia, expressed concerns regarding the potential impact on traffic congestion. The municipal authorities state they were not officially informed of the decision and learned about it through media reports. They highlighted that critical infrastructure upgrades, specifically necessary road works, have not been prioritized alongside the project approval. During previous public consultations, the municipalities had raised concerns regarding the scale of the development and its potential negative impact on local small and medium-sized businesses. Municipal leaders stated they are considering all legal rights and options in response to the lack of consultation. The project remains a point of contention as the government has not yet addressed the prerequisite infrastructure requirements requested by local officials.
