Nicosia municipality announces architectural competition for municipal garden redevelopment

The Nicosia municipality has officially announced an architectural competition for the redevelopment of the historic municipal garden. The project, presented at Nicosia town hall on July 10, 2026, by Mayor Charalambos Prountzos and the Development Agency of Nicosia, carries an estimated budget of €4.1 million excluding VAT. The formal tender for the architectural design is expected to be published by the end of summer 2026. The initiative aims to modernize the space while preserving its century-old historical character and architectural identity. Mayor Prountzos emphasized that interventions should be functional, safe, and potentially reversible to ensure the site's authenticity for future generations. This project aligns with the municipality's broader mandate to increase green space, following the planting of 22,500 new trees over the last two years. Municipal secretary Myria Pilakouta described the effort as a major rebirth for the public space.
