Fire service and local authorities issue alerts due to high temperatures

Fire Chief Nikos Longinos has convened an emergency meeting for Tuesday at 08:15 at the Fire Service headquarters to discuss preventative measures against wildfires. Fire Service spokesperson Andreas Kettis stated that the meeting aims to address the challenges posed by an upcoming heatwave. The Fire Service has responded to 1,350 fires so far in 2026, with over 10% having the potential to become major incidents. Kettis warned that many fires result from human negligence, such as cigarette disposal, improper agricultural work, or trash burning. Concurrently, the municipality of Polis Chrysochous has urged residents to avoid spark-producing activities and to report suspicious behavior. Citizens are advised to contact the Fire Service at 112 or the Forestry Department at 1407 if they spot fire or smoke. Protecting the environment and property is being treated as a collective responsibility. Local authorities are coordinating to minimize the risk of fire-related damages.
