European Union bans destruction of unsold clothing and footwear

The European Commission has announced a new regulation banning the destruction of unsold clothing, accessories, and footwear. This measure is part of the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation aimed at reducing environmental waste and resource depletion. Large corporations are prohibited from destroying these unsold goods starting July 19. Medium-sized enterprises must comply with these rules by 2030, while small and micro-enterprises are exempt from the requirements. Companies are mandated to prioritize keeping products in use through strategies such as discounting, donations to charities, or refurbishment. The destruction of goods will only be permitted under specific, strictly defined circumstances. The initiative seeks to promote a circular economy by preventing the loss of raw materials, water, energy, and labor invested in production. Furthermore, the regulation aims to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions associated with the disposal of new and usable items.
