Cyprus Energy Regulatory Authority imposes fine on Distribution System Operator
The Cyprus Energy Regulatory Authority (CERA) has imposed a 500,000 euro fine on the Distribution System Operator (DSO), which operates under the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC). The sanction follows significant delays in submitting metering data required for the competitive electricity market. These delays prevented timely monthly settlements and reconciliation processes between market participants, violating Electricity Market Rules. In addition to the lump sum, CERA imposed a daily fine of 500 euros for each day the violation continues. The DSO acknowledged the non-compliance, citing technical malfunctions, information system issues, and the mass installation of smart meters. Furthermore, the DSO noted organizational and staffing shortages as contributing factors. CERA justified the penalty as a necessary measure to ensure market compliance and protect the functionality of the energy sector.
