5.0 magnitude earthquake strikes Malatya, Turkey

An earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale occurred on Saturday, July 18, at 6:20 a.m. local time in the Battalgazi district of Malatya province, Turkey. According to the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), the tremor originated at a depth of 15.59 kilometers. The earthquake was felt in the neighboring provinces of Elazig, Adiyaman, Tunceli, and Sanliurfa. As of the latest reports, there have been no casualties or significant material damage. Murat Kurum, the Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, confirmed that authorities are evaluating all incoming reports but have found no negative developments thus far. Emergency teams have been deployed to the field to continue their assessments. The region, which suffered catastrophic damage from a massive earthquake in 2023, remains under monitoring.
