Cyprus authorities on high alert for wildfire risks amid heatwave

On Tuesday, July 21, 2026, the Cyprus Fire Service held an emergency meeting chaired by Fire Chief and National Fire Coordinator Nikos Longinos to address the threat of wildfires. Due to an upcoming 10-day period characterized by heatwave conditions, temperatures exceeding 40°C, high winds, and humidity levels below 20%, authorities have increased both aerial and ground patrols. The meeting involved representatives from the Department of Forests, the Game and Fauna Service, the Civil Defence, the National Guard, and the Police to refine tactical responses. Since January 2026, approximately 1,350 countryside fires have been reported. Concurrently, the Department of Forests declared a 'Red Alert' for Wednesday, warning the public that causing a fire is a criminal offense under national legislation. Citizens are urged to avoid any activities that could trigger a blaze and to report any smoke or fire immediately by calling 1407 or 112.
