Fire services increase readiness amid heatwave and fire alerts in Greece and Cyprus
On Saturday, July 18, 2026, Greek and Cypriot authorities announced increased operational readiness due to high temperatures and fire risks. In Cyprus, Fire Chief Nikos Longinos has scheduled a coordination meeting for Tuesday at 08:15 to discuss emergency measures. Cypriot fire officials reported 1,350 fire incidents in 2026 and are bolstering resources with new equipment and 60 additional firefighters. Concurrently, the Greek Civil Protection Agency designated several regions in Crete as category 4 (very high risk) and Attica as category 3 (high risk) for wildfires. A significant fire is currently burning near Sitia, Crete, where 60 firefighters, 18 vehicles, and aerial support are engaged. Local authorities in Sitia, including Mayor Giorgos Zervakis, stated that residential areas are not currently at risk despite strong winds. Authorities continue to urge the public to avoid outdoor activities that may spark fires, emphasizing that most incidents arise from negligence.
