Forestry Department issues red alert for fire risk due to heatwave

The Cyprus Department of Forestry has issued a red alert regarding the high risk of forest fire ignition and spread, attributed to extreme temperatures and heatwave conditions. The alert was active on July 19 and July 21, 2026. Authorities emphasize that causing a fire is a criminal offense punishable under the Forest Law and the Rural Fire Prevention and Suppression Law. Fire Chief Nikos Longinos has convened an emergency meeting for Tuesday with national coordinators to implement additional prevention measures. Data shows that the Fire Service has responded to 1,350 fires in 2026, with over 10% posing a significant threat to infrastructure and nature. The public is urged to avoid any activities in the countryside that could spark a flame, including the use of hot tools or improper disposal of waste. If a fire or smoke is detected, citizens must immediately call 1407 or 112. This alert follows a separate wildfire in Pyrga that affected approximately thirty hectares of land.
