Iranian military strikes in northern Iraq result in casualties at Komala party camps

On July 18, 2026, drone and missile strikes were conducted against camps belonging to the exiled Iranian Kurdish party, Komala, near Sulaymaniyah in northern Iraq. The Komala party reported that nine fighters were killed and two were injured in an attack occurring at 04:30 local time. A separate strike on another camp in the same region resulted in two additional injuries among members of the faction. Reports also indicate that a weapons depot belonging to Kurdish rebels was targeted by a missile in a different incident within the Kurdistan region of Iraq. The Komala party has formally condemned these strikes. The Iranian government has previously accused these opposition groups of serving American or Israeli interests. Despite a ceasefire announced in April, tensions and cross-border attacks between Iran and these groups have persisted. The autonomous Kurdistan region in Iraq, which hosts U.S. military bases, has been a frequent site of such operations.
