Police inspection reveals safety and infrastructure issues in Cyprus sports venues

Following inspections in early June by the police department for the prevention of athletic violence, authorities identified significant safety and infrastructure deficiencies across various stadiums and arenas in Cyprus. Out of seven football stadiums inspected, only two—Alpha Mega Limassol and AEK Arena—received approval, while four failed, and GSP remains pending. Key issues noted across facilities include outdated or ineffective CCTV systems, lack of electronic ticket and access control, improper seat numbering, and inadequate accessibility for disabled persons. Specific problems identified include insufficient lighting at the Antonis Papadopoulos stadium, safety concerns regarding VAR vehicle placement, and structural risks at various indoor arenas such as the Apollon Limassol hall and Paralimni municipal hall. The Apollon hall faces issues with spectator crowding and proximity to the AEL hall, leading to tensions, while other venues lack basic fire and security protocols. Police emphasize the need for professional facility management and complete upgrades rather than minor repairs to ensure the safe commencement of the new football season. While some venues have made improvements since last year, the police reports highlight that many facilities still fall short of operational standards.
