Changes to police protection for Cypriot political figures
Nikos Anastasiou, the former president of EDEK, has lost his police escort following his resignation after the party failed to secure seats in Parliament. Assistant Police Chief Ioannis Mavrohannas confirmed that the three officers previously assigned to his security detail will be reassigned to other duties starting next Monday. Minister of Justice and Public Order Kostas Fytiris is currently spearheading a comprehensive review of the security status of various political figures. This review includes the potential removal of police escorts for DIPA president Marios Garoyian and former Speakers of the House Yiannakis Omirou and Dimitris Syllouris. The ministry is also evaluating the security detail of former President of the Republic Nikos Anastasiades. Conversely, discussions are underway to provide two police officers each to Odysseas Michaelides and Fidias Panayiotou. For Panayiotou, officials are considering repurposing his security team for other police duties during his absences abroad for European Parliament obligations.
