Cyprus plans electricity storage system expansion

The Transmission System Operator of Cyprus (TSOC) has announced a strategy to develop centralized electricity storage systems to modernize the national grid. This initiative involves both state-led planning and private sector participation. TSOC has officially issued connection terms for private investors regarding standalone storage projects with a total capacity exceeding 200 MW and 500 MWh. Additionally, connection terms have been issued for hybrid private systems, such as solar panels combined with battery storage, totaling 29 MW and approximately 100 MWh. Officials stated that these infrastructures are essential for grid stability, comparing their importance to critical facilities like ports and airports. The operator emphasized that this move is intended to accelerate the green energy transition and improve cost-efficiency. It was clarified that state activity in this sector is designed to prepare the market for further private investment rather than crowding it out. The storage solutions are presented as a vital component for Cyprus's long-term energy security.
