New York City mayor discusses potential arrest of Benjamin Netanyahu
New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani recently stated that he is examining the legal possibility of arresting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he attends the United Nations General Assembly in September. The mayor, speaking in an interview with The New York Times, referred to the existing arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court. While admitting uncertainty regarding his actual legal authority to arrest a foreign head of state, Mamdani confirmed he is consulting with New York City authorities on the matter. He also noted a previous public commitment to enforce International Criminal Court warrants against various world leaders, including Vladimir Putin. Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon dismissed the comments, accusing the mayor of seeking media attention and fueling hostility against Israel. Danon maintained that the Prime Minister will travel to New York as planned to address the General Assembly. The event is scheduled to take place at the United Nations headquarters in September.
