Public scrutiny over tax-free travel allowances for Cyprus members of parliament
Recent reports in the newspaper Phileleftheros have highlighted ongoing public debate regarding the €685 monthly tax-free travel allowance provided to each of the 56 members of the Cyprus Parliament. This benefit amounts to €8,220 annually per member, resulting in a total state expenditure of €460,320 per year. The allowance is paid on a flat, universal basis, regardless of actual travel frequency or whether Parliament is in session during holidays or election periods. Calculations suggest this sum covers approximately 83,900 kilometers per year, or over 400 kilometers per working day when accounting for parliamentary operating days. Critics point out that the lack of transparent documentation or verification mechanisms for these expenses raises questions about whether the payment reflects actual service-related costs. In the public sector, commuting to and from work is not typically classified as a reimbursable travel expense, further fueling the demand for greater accountability. The issue of parliamentary privileges and multiple pensions has been a subject of legislative focus since 2017.
