Reflections on the 52nd anniversary of the 1974 events in Cyprus
July 20 marks the 52nd anniversary of the start of the invasion of Cyprus in 1974. Following the initial military action on July 20, a second phase occurred on August 14, leading to the mass displacement of residents from areas such as Mesaoria and Lysi. Thousands of civilians were forced to flee their homes, leaving behind personal belongings and properties with the expectation of a quick return. Over the past five decades, the displaced population has been unable to return to their original places of residence. The event is characterized by some as a military invasion resulting in occupation, while others emphasize the human cost and the forced nature of the population displacement. Despite the passage of time, the issue of displacement remains a significant historical and social legacy for the Cypriot people. Many of the original residents have since passed away, while subsequent generations continue to live with the consequences of this historical event.
