Earthquake hits Junin province in Peru

A strong earthquake occurred on Saturday at 21:24 local time in the Junin province of Peru. The epicenter was located 7 kilometers south of the Chupaca community, with a focal depth of 24 kilometers. Sources provide differing data on the magnitude: the Peruvian Geophysical Institute (IGP) reported 5.1, while the United States Geological Survey (USGS) estimated it at 5.5. Media reports indicate the collapse of several buildings near the epicenter. While initial official information mentioned at least one fatality, subsequent media reports have raised the death toll to at least three, including a 17-year-old, and reported 11 injuries.
