Fire at the Central Prisons of Cyprus
On July 20, 2026, at approximately 10:15 p.m., a fire broke out in Wing 4, a maximum-security section of the Central Prisons. Authorities report that three inmates deliberately set fire to their cells and the corridor of the wing, which houses a total of ten prisoners. The blaze resulted in burnt mattresses and smoke damage throughout the area. Prison staff conducted an immediate and safe evacuation of all inmates from the affected wing. The Fire Service responded to the scene and successfully extinguished the fire. No inmates were injured during the incident. One staff member was transported to the hospital as a precautionary measure due to smoke inhalation. The inmates involved have been temporarily relocated, and an investigation into the circumstances of the fire is currently underway.
