UN Secretary-General to visit Cyprus for diplomatic talks

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres is scheduled to visit Cyprus from July 27 to 29 to assess the possibility of convening a five-party informal conference in September. During his visit, Guterres will be accompanied by UN Under-Secretaries-General Rosemary DiCarlo and Jean-Pierre Lacroix, alongside his personal envoy María Ángela Holguín. His itinerary includes private meetings with President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman, as well as engagements with negotiators and civil society representatives. Diplomatic reports suggest the primary goal is to determine the presence of sufficient political will to resume reunification talks, while local sources caution that the visit could be affected by the security situation in the Middle East. President Christodoulides has convened a meeting with political leaders to coordinate the Greek Cypriot side's position. The UN maintains that any future negotiations must be grounded in Security Council resolutions and a bizonal, bicommunal federation framework. This visit marks the first time a UN Secretary-General has traveled to the island in 16 years.
