UN Secretary-General to visit Cyprus for diplomatic talks

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres is scheduled to visit Cyprus from July 27 to 29 to assess the possibility of resuming peace negotiations. Accompanied by Under-Secretaries-General Rosemary DiCarlo and Jean-Pierre Lacroix, Guterres will hold separate meetings with President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman on July 28. He will also host a private dinner for both leaders that evening, followed by a joint meeting on July 29. The mission’s success largely depends on the work of his Personal Envoy, María Ángela Holguín, who is set to meet Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan on July 26 in Ankara to discuss the conditions for an informal five-party meeting. While the UN seeks a results-oriented approach, the visit remains contingent on regional security conditions in the Middle East. Some diplomatic sources suggest the goal is to establish a negotiating framework before the end of Guterres's term, potentially leading to a conference in late August or September. The Cypriot government maintains that any process must be based on existing Security Council resolutions and rejects rumors of unofficial proposals for a looser federal structure.
