Court proceedings in the Tempi train accident trial

The Three-Member Court of Appeals for Felonies in Larissa is currently hearing motions from defense attorneys regarding the ongoing trial for the 2023 Tempi train collision. Defense lawyers for EROSE and OSE officials requested a trial postponement based on Article 59 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, arguing that the outcome depends on a separate ongoing investigation by the European Public Prosecutor's Office regarding the 717 contract. The prosecutor rejected these requests, stating that the two legal cases are distinct, as the European investigation focuses on financial damage to the European Union, whereas the Tempi trial focuses on the fatal accident. Furthermore, defense attorneys sought to nullify the indictments, claiming ambiguity and inconsistency in the charges. A brief interruption occurred in the courtroom after an outburst by Nikos Plakias, whose twin daughters died in the accident, following comments by a defense attorney suggesting that OSE staff were unconnected to the investigated crimes. The court continues to evaluate these procedural objections and requests for postponement.
